Red is the colour for new Winchester art show

THE next exhibition at the Minster Gallery in Winchester will feature the works of Japanese artist Masako Tobita.
After studying in Tokyo she moved to New York, and then to Britain where she has lived for 22 years.
She has displayed her abstract paintings in many venues across the UK, including the Royal Academy in London.
She said: “As the days begin, I pick up a brush, mix some colours and start making a first mark on a canvas, without knowing where it will lead to.
“My work is very much like an autobiography, layers of feelings about the past, the present and the future.”
Her colourful artworks often take their lead from childhood memories and other lifetime experiences.
However, when her Japanese homeland was struck by a devastating tsunami last March, she changed her style.
Since then she has painted mainly in red, which is the dominant colour in many of her recent works.
Masako Tobita’s show, Between the Times, will run from Friday, February 24 and Saturday, March 24.
The gallery in Great Minster Street is open from 10am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday.
